Cloud Computing vs. Local Servers: Which is Right for Your Data?
Evaluating Infrastructure Choices
The decision between storing data on a physical server in your office (local/on-premise) or using remote internet-based infrastructure (cloud computing) is fundamental to IT strategy, especially considering Kenya’s unique constraints.
Cloud Computing (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
**Pros:** Excellent scalability, high redundancy (built-in 3-2-1 backup), no capital expenditure (CAPEX) on hardware, and accessible from anywhere (great for remote work). **Cons:** Requires stable, fast internet (a major constraint locally), higher long-term operating expenditure (OPEX), and data residency concerns.
Local Servers (On-Premise)
**Pros:** Full control over hardware and data, no internet dependency once data is loaded, and lower recurring monthly fees. **Cons:** High initial CAPEX (server hardware, UPS, cooling), requires physical security, limited scalability, and IT staff must manage all maintenance, backups, and redundancy.
**Hybrid Approach:** Many Kenyan businesses use a hybrid model—keeping essential, high-traffic data locally while leveraging the cloud for secure off-site backup and non-critical applications.
