Setting Up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for Remote Team Security

The Secure Gateway to Your Corporate Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates an encrypted, secure tunnel over the public internet, allowing remote employees (working from home or coffee shops) to access corporate resources (files, shared drives, internal software) safely, as if they were physically in the office.

VPN Setup and Policy

  • **Dedicated VPN Solution:** Use a business-grade VPN appliance (hardware) or software solution (e.g., OpenVPN, corporate firewall integration) rather than relying on consumer VPN services.
  • **Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):** Always enforce 2FA for VPN access. Even if a hacker steals an employee’s password, they cannot connect without the second factor (a code from the user’s phone).
  • **Split Tunneling (Optional):** Define which traffic goes through the secure VPN tunnel (corporate data) and which goes directly to the internet (personal browsing). This saves bandwidth on the corporate internet line.
  • **Mandatory Use Policy:** Enforce a policy that staff must connect to the VPN when accessing any company resources, especially when using public Wi-Fi, to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.

The VPN acts as a necessary shield, encrypting traffic that might otherwise be intercepted over insecure networks.
